Species Diversity
There are several different species that are found in the Seychelles Islands that both inhabit the Granitic and Coralline Islands. However, the Granitic Island have consistently been decimated by human settlement and pollution. Such species that were once abundant on both islands include the Giant tortoises. On the islands there are several native terrapins, as well as 7 species of legless caecilians, 4 native frogs, 3 native snakes, an endemic Chameleon, and several species of geckos and skinks. One of the endemic mammal species, the critically endangered Seychelles sheath-tailed bat (Coleura seychellensis)(Hilton Taylor 2000) is found on the granitic islands. The Seychelles also have a large, unique fauna of land birds that consists of 12 endemic species found there.
